Contrary to what the title may imply, Urban Fare does not include any carnival rides or ponies. Urban Fare is all about hip-hop, the culture and the art that surrounds it.
Anthony Pena, one of the coordinators of Urban Fare, succinctly described Urban Fare as “a hip-hop showcase focused on expressing the arts and foundation of inner D.C. hip-hop as a cultural attitude and a means to empower and encourage unity.”
Urban Fare works hard to debunk the myths and social stereotypes of hip-hop as merely an alternative musical form of this generation. Hip-hop, as Urban Fare depicts it, is not just a style of music, but an art form and a method of expression.
The show, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, finds its roots in a student competition from 1999. From there, founder Andres Santiago decided that there needed to be a show where the spirit of hip-hop and urban arts could come together and be celebrated on Georgetown’s campus.
Urban Fare presents a wide range of hip-hop attitude and perspective — the event showcases far more than just the expected singing, dancing, poetry and rapping. There are performers of all kinds: everything from a capella groups and spoken word, to Afro-Cuban dancing and a local D.C. go-go band. A list of performers includes the well-loved Groove Theory, the Latin dance flavor of Ritmo y Sabor Dance Company, Kelvin Hill, Jeremy Guyton, Vizions and more.
The performers make the show, and being 10 years in the making, they are continually pushing the bar higher and higher. The coordinating staff has been hard at work, securing contracts, auditioning and rehearsing. Besides the technical setup, they have also been ensuring that the show is dynamic enough in terms of the different elements of hip-hop.
Thus, Urban Fare presents a lot of acts that otherwise might never appear on campus. The coordinating team has purposefully reached out to the greater D.C. community to get off-campus performers, in hopes of representing different perspectives from all over the District. Urban Fare is committed to the idea of community and recognizes the fact that the D.C. community is more than just the National Mall and M Street.
This sense of community extends to Urban Fare’s dedication to and support of the arts in education. An integral and distinguishing aspect of the show is Urban Fare’s mission to raise scholarship money for graduating Duke Ellington School of the Arts students, to which all of the proceeds of the show will be given.
Duke Ellington is best known to Georgetown students for the big green chair on its lawn. However, it is renowned as a public school that provides talented students with the chance to explore both academic and artistic instruction, along with future opportunities. Coincidentally, a student from Duke Ellington will be performing at Urban Fare.
In this mission, Urban Fare partners up with the Male Development Association (MDA) and Girl Talk to raise awareness of the importance of college education in an urban community — both organizations tutor and mentor students at Duke Ellington on a weekly basis. This service feature of Urban Fare elevates it so far beyond a showcase or night of entertainment. It helps ground the show in reality and give meaning to what is going on by demonstrating how art influences life.
Capping 10 years of non-stop hip-hop, this year’s show will be better than ever. “Georgetown shows will never be the same again,” Pena said. The new theme of “And Ya Don’t Stop: The Evolution of Hip-hop” highlights Urban Fare’s dedication to making their mark and starting a movement.
Hosted by Nicole Jones (NHS ’10) and Adria Crawford (COL ’12) of the women’s basketball team, the 10th anniversary of Urban Fare is coming to Georgetown Live this Friday night. It will be a hot celebration of hip-hop, youth and education and, of course, entertainment.
Urban Fare is on Friday, Oct. 30, in Gaston Hall. The show begins at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.
