Throwing parties just got one step easier. Usually, if you’re going to host a party or even just invite a bunch of friends over, there are a few necessary preparations you go through as a common courtesy — cleaning up, arranging seating for people, getting some food and drink for your guests. It’s easy to let music fall to the side — who has time to create a playlist, let alone download all the current songs that people want to hear? Unfortunately, it’s always pretty awkward and super noticeable when there’s no music on, so I wouldn’t advise writing off the idea of a party playlist. Instead, a really easy and practical solution can be found within the bountiful and mysterious World Wide Web: FratMusic.com.

This totally free upstart Web site hosts playlists created on ProjectPlaylist.com (a site I have used in the past that’s easy to use and has a wide music selection) and visitors can stream all the songs straight from the Web page. Basically, the only thing you need to give your party the perfect soundtrack is an internet connection. The site has multiple playlists, all frequently updated, including current popular songs on the “Hot 25” and “Classic 50” lists, and other playlists that range from “Rock” and “’80s” to “Kickback” and “After Party.”

As off-putting as the name of this Web site is — conjuring up images of good-old-boy frat daddies drinking beer out of koozies outside the chapter house, croakies securing their Costa Del Mar shades to their lax-bro perfect hair — the site’s creators have a disclaimer at the bottom of the page indicating they are not in fraternities. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

FratMusic.com is actually accessible and well put together, and the music itself is exactly what you’re looking for. The “Power Hour” mix has a really solid selection of one-minute clips from awesome songs; while one of my favorites, the “Throwback Rap” mix, contains gems from artists like Wu-Tang Clan, Sugarhill Gang, Jurassic 5 and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. To my surprise, the “Ladies Mix” is actually great, featuring songs that girls tend to like more than guys do, including Miley Cyrus, Jesse McCartney, Lady Gaga and Soulja Boy Tell’Em’s “Kiss Me Thru The Phone,” unabashedly one of my favorite radio-friendly songs from this summer. FratMusic.com also just added a “Homework Mix” with classical music selections from Beethoven and Mozart, which stands out pretty drastically from the rest of the site and may in fact be in jest. But there is a “Techno” mix as well, so it remains to be seen whether the site creators are actually seeking to achieve musical diversity on FratMusic.com.

There are no gimmicks or distractions here — the Web page is streamlined, simple and bare, with only a single ad on the right side. Their site description is equally to the point: “Everyone knows that frats tend to play the best dance music. We have compiled the best songs from frats all over the U.S. We update our site regularly so that you can have crackin’ pregames and crackin’ dance parties.” OK, so the use of the word “crackin’” sounds eerily like something my dad might say in an effort to sound cool, which might indicate that the site creators really aren’t in frats (and might not even be in college). But regardless, these guys have provided a great service to college campuses everywhere, making it easier than ever to throw a hassle-free party. Listen for FratMusic.com at your next party, pregame, gathering or even group project — that “Homework Mix” might be the next big thing.
